Nathan Dungan:
Generosity & Financial Sanity 3-1-1
"Doing Money Well"
All of us, particularly youth, are exposed to 5,000 ad impressions every day from billboards, radio, TV and internet ads, clothing logos and many other forms of media. In this context, Nathan Dungan says, we need to “get right with money as interaction or we default to culture whose message is see money, spend money.”
Noted author and teacher, Nathan Dungan spoke to MFC staff and Board at the MFC Annual General Meeting in April 2009 about a unique approach called “Share, Save ,Spend” , which he has developed to take advantage of what he identifies as this teachable moment. “Notice the order of those words,” he underscored for us. By beginning with share first, save second and spend last, this can create a new framework for viewing money that directly opposes the message of those 5000 daily ad impressions.
Dungan believes that doing money well has less to do with IQ and more to do with values and habits. It’s time to emphasize money as interaction in families and social networks where stories are developed and shared, relationships are nurtured and perspective is broadened from me to we. This common activity is what will make generosity possible into new generations, Dungan encouraged us. The choice is ours.
